KATHMANDU: The government has decided to hold elections for 18 National Assembly seats on January 25.
A cabinet meeting held on Wednesday afternoon made the decision, according to Government Spokesperson Minister for Communication and Information Technology Jagdish Kharel.
The tenure of 19 members elected in the 2019 National Assembly election is ending on March 4 next year. Of them, 18 were elected, while one, Bamdev Gautam, was nominated by the President. Elections will therefore be held for the 18 elected seats. A new member will be nominated by the President on the recommendation of the Council of Ministers to fill the single vacant position.
The election must be conducted at least 35 days before the term of the member expires.
The outgoing members include eight from the CPN-UML, seven from the CPN (Maoist Center), one each from the CPN (Unified Socialist) and Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) Nepal and one from the Loktantrik Samajbadi Party (LSP) Nepal, and one nominated member.
The National Assembly comprises of 57 members — eight elected from each of the seven provinces and three nominated by the President. The electoral college consists of members of the provincial assembly, and chairperson/mayor and the vice-chairperson/deputy mayor of the local bodies within the province.
The tenure of 19 members expires every two years.
