KATHMANDU: The government has decided to recommend to the President the convening of a session of the National Assembly on January 18.
A Cabinet meeting held on Monday made the decision, according to Government Spokesperson and Minister for Communication and Information Technology Jagdish Kharel.
This will be the first session of the upper house since the Gen Z protests of September 8 and 9, which claimed 76 lives. Many government buildings, business establishments and private residences were torched and vandalized by protesters during those two days.
President Ram Chandra Poudel prorogued the National Assembly session on September 16.
As the Birendra International Convention Centre, which had been used as the Parliament building, was torched and vandalised during the Gen Z protests, the government is preparing to hold the National Assembly session at the meeting hall of the House Committee on Agriculture and Natural Resources at Singha Durbar.
Meanwhile, the new Parliament building under construction within the Singha Durbar premises is nearing completion.
