Govt committed to take transitional justice process to conclusion: Oli

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has expressed commitment to providing all necessary facilitation to ensure the success of two transitional justice commissions – the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Commission of Investigation on Enforced Disappeared Persons.

Oli made this commitment during a program attended by Nepali Congress (NC) President and former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and CPN (Maoist Center) Chairperson and former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal.

The three leaders were participating in the National Conference on Transitional Justice held in Kathmandu on Thursday.

“We need to review why the previous work of the two transitional justice commissions was unsuccessful,” Oli said. “There is a need to make collective efforts to ensure their success now.”

Oli added that the government was working actively to provide justice and reparation to the victims. “Unnecessary and unjust violence, as seen in the past, will not recur. The parliament enacted transitional justice law on a consensus basis to take the peace process to a logical conclusion,” he added.

The government has now formed a new search committee to name chairpersons and members of the two commissions after the term of the previous committee expired without completing its task.

Likewise, NC President Deuba said that the party is committed to bringing the issue of transitional justice to a logical conclusion.

“There is no disagreement amongst us on delivering justice to the victims. The current government is moving forward to complete the remaining tasks of the peace agreement,” he said. Deuba added that Nepal should resolve transitional justice issues domestically and set an exemplary model for the world.

Stating that the search committee for appointing officials to the transitional justice commissions has already been formed, Deuba expressed confidence that investigations into human rights violations during the armed conflict would begin in line with the spirit of the peace agreement.

Similarly, Maoist Center Chairperson Dahal said there was no alternative to unity in concluding the peace process. “There is no dispute among political parties regarding the peace process. We need to make collective efforts to take the transitional justice process to its conclusion,” he added.

Stating that transitional justice is a national issue, he said that it should not be influenced by external political interference.
