Governor will be appointed on the basis of merit: Oli

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has stated that he is in favor of appointing the Governor of the Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) based on merit rather than personal connections.

Speaking at the launch of the Former Planners’ Forum Nepal in Kathmandu on Thursday, Oli said he doesn’t have anyone to bring into the central bank. “We will bring capable people based on meritocracy. If someone can perform, it will benefit the country,” Oli said. “Therefore, I will prioritize meritocracy as much as possible.”

The cabinet on Wednesday evening restructured the Governor Recommendation Committee after Dr Bishwo Paudel stepped down from the three-member committee.

Economist Posh Raj Pandey has been named in Paudel’s place. Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel and Former Governor Maha Prasad Adhikari are the other members of the committee.

The Prime Minister also clarified that the appointments of the chairpersons and members of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Commission of Investigation on Enforced Disappeared Persons were also made based on recommendations made by a search committee.
