KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa has claimed that the party’s general convention will take place before the 2027 election.
Addressing the first convention of the Nepal Tharu Association in Tulsipur on Sunday, Thapa insisted that the party’s general convention would occur on time as per its statute. “In accordance with the constitution, law, and the party’s statute, the general convention will be held before the 2027 election,” he said. “If anyone claims it will happen after the election, that would be against the statute, the constitution and the law.”
Thapa further added that the NC would contest the 2027 general election independently, without forming alliances with any other party, as had been done in the past.
Likewise, he said the party statute should be amended to allow district committees to select candidates on their own. “The statute must be amended so that candidates for, say, Dang are chosen by party members of Dang. Having Kathmandu select Dang’s candidates isn’t logical.”
