KATHMANDU: At least 17 people were killed in Kathmandu on Monday after police opened fire during a demonstration organized by Gen Z protesters.
The deaths occurred in the New Baneshwar area, where the demonstrations turned violent. According to security sources, three victims died at Civil Hospital, six at the National Trauma Center, two at Kathmandu Medical College Teaching Hospital, five at Everest Hospital and one at TU Teaching Hospital. The identities of most of the deceased have yet to be confirmed.
Dozens of protesters and security personnel were also injured in the clashes. The injured are receiving treatment at Civil Hospital, Everest Hospital, Trauma Center and Kathmandu Medical College Teaching Hospital, among others.
Police said they were compelled to open fire after demonstrators defied restrictions, broke through a prohibited zone and began pelting stones, injuring several security personnel.
The protest escalated when demonstrators stormed toward the parliament building in New Baneshwar, vandalized property inside the compound, and set fire to a security post, police say. As the situation spiraled out of control, the Nepal Army was deployed to restore order.
In response, the District Administration Office, Kathmandu, has imposed a curfew in major administrative and political areas, including Singha Durbar, the parliament building, Naryanhiti Museum, and the offices of the President and the Vice President.
