KATHMANDU: Garbage disposal at the Bancharedanda Landfill Site has been disrupted as locals of the area have been turning garbage trucks back toward Kathmandu.

Bancharedanda is the only landfill site for over 1,200 tons of waste generated in Kathmandu Valley every day.

Locals obstructed waste disposal, claiming that past agreements reached with the Kathmandu Metropolitan City and the Ministry of Urban Development (Nepal) have not been implemented.

Niranjan Sanjal, a resident of the affected area, said garbage trucks carrying waste from Kathmandu have been turned back. “The local people have suffered a lot due to repeated deferral of past agreements. The obstruction will continue until our demands are fulfilled,” he said.

Locals had also obstructed garbage disposal in October last year. They lifted the obstruction after a few days following assurances from the then Minister for Urban Development, Kulman Ghising, to immediately implement past agreements.

Affected locals from wards 1, 2, and 3 of Kakani Rural Municipality of Nuwakot and wards 1, 3, and 4 of Dhunibesi Municipality of Dhading have been staging a sit-in on the road at Dhade on the border of the two districts.

Local elected representatives and political leaders have supported the protest.
