Gagan for investigating assets of all who held power since 1990s

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa has said the party must endorse a proposal to form a powerful commission to investigate the assets of all individuals who held power at any level—from local wards to the central government—after the political change of the 1990s.

Speaking at a program organized by his party unit in Kathmandu on Sunday, Thapa said that a powerful investigation commission should be formed under the leadership of a trusted individual to probe the wealth of those who have served at various levels of government since 1990.

He added that the NC must be bold enough to declare that it will accept the findings of such a probe, no matter who is implicated, to regain the trust of the younger generation. “Unless the concerns of the current generation are addressed, the party would not be able to connect with them,” Thapa added.

Thapa also said the Nepal Student Union (NSU), the student wing of the NC, should take a resolve not to lock university gates, smear black soot on officials, or resort to vandalism—even if they are dissatisfied with certain issues.

“The new generation is seeking new leadership and fresh perspectives in national politics. As the upcoming elections will be decided by the younger demographic, he said the party must move forward by understanding and responding to their aspirations,” he added.
