Gagan, Bishwo postpone NC’s 15th general convention

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress General Secretaries Gagan Kumar Thapa and Bishwo Prakash Sharma have announced the postponement of the party’s 15th General Convention scheduled to be held in Kathmandu on January 10-12.

Issuing a joint statement on Thursday, the two general secretaries said the timetable for the general convention has been postponed, and the revised schedule will be endorsed at the next meeting. “The entire schedule has been affected and rendered ineffective as it was not possible to revise and accelerate the preceding activities in line with the target of completing the regular general convention by Poush January 10,” the statement said.

The two leaders have also put forward the option of holding a special convention.

“A regular general convention was the primary option to address the demand for a special general convention, which had been registered at the central party office with signatures from 54% of the convention representatives,” they said in the statement. “However, as the regular general convention could not be held within the stipulated timeframe, the option of a special general convention has once again come to the fore.”

The two insisted that it is the responsibility of the central office to address the demand related to a special general convention as per Article 17(2) of the party statute. “The tasks under this responsibility will be carried out as far as possible through consensus,” they added.
