POKHARA: As many as four were injured in a khukuri (traditional Nepali knife) attack during the Lamjung district convention of Nepal Tarun Dal, the youth wing of the Nepali Congress (NC), on Saturday. Two of the injured have been referred to Kathmandu for further treatment.
The incident occurred during the opening session of the fifth district convention of Tarun Dal in Besisahar. One faction of Tarun Dal attacked another faction with a khukuri during the program, according to eyewitnesses.
Those injured in the incident include Khusijung Gurung, the regional president of Tarun Dal and also the ward chairperson of Besisahar–9; Kishorjung Basnet, a member of the NC’s Lamjung District Committee of the Nepali Congress; Sudip Adhikari, a central member of the Nepal Student Union, the student wing of NC; and Dhan Ghale, a member of Tarun Dal.
One faction of Tarun Dal has accused Gandaki Province Finance Minister Dr. Taka Raj Gurung, who is also the district president of the NC, along with District Secretary Krishna Bahadur Adhikari and former regional president Brisha Raj Gurung, of inciting the use of weapons.
The incident is said to have resulted from factional conflict between youths aligned with Dr Gurung and Gandaki Province Forest Minister Bhesh Bahadur Paudel, who is also a former district president of the NC.
