KATHMANDU: Former Nepali cricket team captain, Gyanendra Malla, has announced his retirement form international cricket. Malla made the announcement during a press meet held in Kathmandu on Friday.
Born on September 16, 1990, the right-handed batsman played 37 One Day International (ODI) matches for Nepal, amassing 876 runs with an average of 24.33 and a strike rate of 66.46. In addition, he featured in 45 T20 matches, scoring 883 runs at an average of 23.23 and a strike rate of 120.29. Likewise, in List A matches, Malla played 77 ODIs and 68 T20s scoring 1802 runs and 1,267 runs, respectively.
Malla made his ODI debut for Nepal in its first ODI against the Netherlands on August 1, 2018. As an opener, he showcased his prowess by scoring 51 runs from 61 balls. His final match representing the national team was against Ireland in Harare on July 4, in which he contributed 7 runs.

The cricketer was appointed as the national team captain in November 2019. Under his leadership, Nepal competed in the 2019 ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup in Bangladesh, as well as the 2019 South Asian Games. However, he was stripped of captaincy due to disciplinary issues in December 2021.
Malla made his national team debut playing for the U-15 team in 2005. He competed in the ACC U-17 and U-19 divisions next year. His standout performance in the junior age levels earned him a place in the Nepal U-19 team for the 2006 Under-19 World Cup. Malla scored 145 runs in six innings. He scored 45 runs in the historic two-run victory against South Africa in the Plate semi-final. He was later appointed as the vice-captain for the Under-19 World Cup in 2008.
