ITAHARI: Former Chief Minister of Koshi Province, Uddhav Thapa, was attacked in Jhapa on Saturday.
Thapa, who is also the President of the Nepali Congress (NC) Koshi Province Committee, was attacked at around 5:30 pm.
According to Krishna Humagain, secretary of Jhapa District Committee of NC, the incident took place near Jukekhadhi at Jamunbari Chowk while Thapa was returning after attending the general assembly of the Nepal Press Union, Jhapa.
Thapa was traveling in a vehicle with the license plate Ba 1 Jha 653. According to Humagain, who was in the same vehicle, the attacker was Bhakta Katwal, the driver of a vehicle with the license plate Ba 1 Na 1870.
“We were returning from the general assembly,” Humagain said over the phone. “When the other vehicle blocked the road, we requested them to give way. When they didn’t, we overtook and moved ahead. Suddenly, their vehicle sped up, blocked our path again, and when the President requested them to give way, the driver attacked him with a punch.”
Katwal is reported to be a resident of Shivsatakshi-11 in Jhapa. Katwal punched Thapa above his left eye with his right hand. The police have taken Katwal into custody.
Following the incident, Thapa was admitted to Birta City Hospital for treatment. He returned home after receiving primary care. Thapa’s close associates have demanded action against those involved in the attack.
The police have stated that further investigation into the case is ongoing.
