Former king responsible for Friday’s incidents: Oli

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has said that former King Gyanendra Shah should bear the primary responsibility for the incident in Tinkune last Friday which claimed two lives.

Addressing the House of Representatives on Monday, Oli said the former monarch incited public sentiment by making provocative statements on the eve of Democracy Day on February 18, urging people to move forward and support him. “On March 9, a so-called ‘welcome procession’ was organized in Kathmandu. Likewise, on March 27, the former monarch called an undesirable individual, attempting to divide society, to his residence, appointed him as the commander and deployed him to orchestrate violent acts,” Oli said. “Preliminary investigations confirm that all these incidents violate the agreement reached after the Constituent Assembly took the historic decision.”

Oli claimed that the former king had agreed with the government that that he would live peacefully as a citizen, exercise his legal and constitutional rights to conduct business, receive security arrangements from the government as a former head of state, use the Nagarjuna Palace, and that his mother would be allowed to use a building within the Narayanhiti Palace premises. “Honorable member of the National Assembly and then-Home Minister Krishna Prasad Sitaula had mediated on behalf of the government,” Oli added.

Oli also said that no one involved in criminal activities, including the former king, would be granted immunity. “Shouldn’t someone who says he would overthrow the system and become king again publicly clarify his stance on all these chain of events? How can those who encourage people to die, such as the so-called ‘people’s commander,’ a person discarded by history leading the campaign, or someone plotting to seize power through destruction and plunder, remain silent within the palace walls? The ultimate responsibility for all these incidents lies with him, and he must take accountability,” Oli said.
