KATHMANDU: Former King Gyanendra Shah has expressed concerns over unfulfilled public aspirations.

In a greeting message issued on the occasion of Dashain, Shah said people’s aspirations remain unfulfilled even though it has already been two decades since he left Narayanhiti Palace. “We left Narayanhiti Palace. But as two decades are about to pass, the unfulfilled aspirations of Nepali people to live happily in their own country have increased our restlessness,” Shah said.

Shah also said the country is currently in a very difficult situation. “The country is burdened by continuous dependency and debt. Our villages and urban areas are becoming devoid of youth. Today, the country lacks an environment where young people can earn and enjoy life,” Shah said in the message, adding that the country is facing dire consequences due to the inability to present alternatives for creating domestic employment and developing a self-reliant economy. “The compulsion to go abroad for employment has not only left our fields barren but has also pierced the hearts of every parent with thorns.”

Stating that he never had any desire other than peace, stability, justice and prosperity for the country, Shah said: “Our focus was and should always be on preventing the pressure and negative influence of external powers, ensuring our country doesn’t become a playground for others, and protecting our land from any form of unrest.”
