KATHMANDU: Police have arrested another prominent figure in the ongoing investigation into a racket that swindled tens of millions of rupees out of hundreds of people by promising to send them to the US as Bhutanese refugees.
Bal Krishna Khand, a former home minister and leader of the Nepali Congress, was arrested from his residence in Chabahil on Wednesday morning. Narendra KC, Khand’s personal aide, has also been arrested.
Tek Narayan Pandey, a former home secretary who was brought to the home ministry by Khand when he was at the helm of the ministry, had already been arrested earlier and is under investigation. The arrest of Khand was made based on statements provided by individuals who are in custody for investigation, according SSP Dan Bahadur Karki, chief of Kathmandu Police.
So far, the police have detained 12 people for questioning. Among them are Dr. Indrajit Rai, an adviser to former home minister Ram Bahadur Thapa, as well as Keshav Dulal, Sanu Bhandari, Sagar Rai, Sandesh Sharma, Tanka Kumar Gurung, Sandip Rayamajhi, Ram Sharan KC, and Govinda Chaudhary.
Furthermore, an arrest warrant has been issued for Top Bahadur Rayamajhi, a former minister and secretary of the CPN-UML party. However, Rayamajhi is currently untraceable and out of contact.
