
KATHMANDU: Nepal has received foreign direct investment (FDI) commitments worth approximately Rs 27 billion in the first seven months of the current fiscal year.
According to the Department of Industry (DoI), Rs 26.84 billion worth of foreign investment commitments for 386 projects have been received till mid-February of the current fiscal year. Investment commitments worth Rs 1.06 billion have been received for 32 projects in the seventh month (mid-January to mid-February) alone.
Of the total FDI commitments received in the seven-month period, commitments worth Rs 2.62 billion came through the online-based automatic route for 175 projects, while the remaining Rs 24.21 billion came for 211 projects through the traditional route. These projects have proposed to create a total of 10,726 jobs.
Investment commitments worth Rs 1.94 billion were received for 32 industries through the Share Purchase Agreement (SPA) and Share Subscription Agreement (SSA). Similarly, the department reported that the Technology Transfer Agreement (TTA) has been approved for 42 industries.
According to the DoI, investment commitments were received for 375 small industries, 7 medium industries, and four large industries in the first seven months of 2024/25. A whopping 65% of FDI commitments in the seven-month period came in the tourism sector, followed by services (21%), manufacturing (8%), ICT (3%), and agriculture (3%).
Foreign investors have expressed commitment to invest Rs 17.32 billion in 168 tourism projects, Rs 5.69 billion in 49 service sector projects, and Rs 2.12 billion in 27 manufacturing projects.
