KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal has said that the fate of the Citizenship Bill will be decided within one month.

In response to lawmakers’ queries at the House of Representatives on Thursday, Dahal mentioned that he was in discussions with senior leaders of other political parties regarding the Citizenship Bill. “The previous President was bound by the constitution to authenticate the Bill approved by both houses of parliament. But it was kept on hold. Now, there is confusion on whether it will be returned back to parliament, will be scrapped or can be authenticated by the new President,” Dahal explained. “We are holding discussions on whether the new President can authenticate it or if there are other alternatives.”

Dahal also revealed that he had consulted with representatives of the Nepal Bar Association and constitution experts on the matter. “We have received suggestions that there are no obstacles to authenticating the Bill by the new President. We have already notified this development to the President,” he added.

Dahal said President Ram Chandra Poudel has informed him that he would make necessary decisions after consulting with the constitution experts.
