KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba has acknowledged a significant shortcoming within the party’s ranks for failing to bring the ideological contributions of the late BP Koirala into discussion in the public spheres.
Inaugurating the BP Literature Festival at the party’s central office in Sanepa on Sunday, Deuba highlighted the party’s failure to delve into BP’s perspectives on socialism, political ideologies, and literature as a major deficiency. Deuba said that although the constitution states that Nepal is a socialist-oriented country, the country has struggled to align its actions with the essence of socialism. “In our constitution, Nepal is defined as a socialist-oriented nation, but we have yet to implement its true meaning effectively.”
He also emphasized BP’s status as a significant international political thinker and champion of social inclusivity, judicial equality, and citizens’ freedom, vehemently opposing all forms of discrimination in Nepali society.
Recalling BP’s advice to him to prioritize being a good man over a big man, Deuba said that BP had a profound understanding of the philosophies of Marx and Gandhi. Deuba remarked, “BP closely aligned with Mahatma Gandhi’s principles of non-violent democracy while recognizing the importance of Marxist philosophy in achieving economic equality.”
Deuba said that the NC organized the literary week to impart knowledge about BP’s multifaceted contributions to today’s generation. “BP was an exemplary and versatile political thinker,” he added.
