KATHMANDU: England and the Netherlands have joined Spain and France in the semifinals of the 2024 Euro by winning their respective quarterfinal matches.
England defeated Switzerland in a tie-breaker after their match ended in a 1-1 draw in the regulation 90 minutes at Dusseldorf on Saturday night.
Breel Embolo scored in the 75th minute to give Switzerland a 1-0 lead. However, Bukayo Saka equalized five minutes later, taking the match into extra time and subsequently a tie-breaker.
Cole Palmer, Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka, Ivan Toney and Trent Alexander-Arnold all scored for England, while English keeper Jordan Pickford saved Akanji’s penalty to send England to the semifinals.
Netherlands 2, Turkey 1
The Netherlands defeated a fighting Turkey 2-1 in the second quarterfinal of the day to advance to the semifinals.
Samet Akaydin gave Turkey the lead in the 35th minute from Arda Guler’s cross. However, the Dutch equalized 20 minutes from the end as Stefan de Vrij headed in Memphis Depay’s cross.
Six minutes later, Mert Muldur bundled a low shot from Dumfries into his own net under pressure from Coady Gakpo to hand the Netherlands a 2-1 lead and a spot in the semifinal.
Spain will meet France in the first semifinal on Wednesday night, while the Netherlands will play against England in the second semifinal on Thursday.
France defeated Portugal in the tie-breaker while Spain defeated Germany 2-1 on Friday night.
