KATHMANDU: England booked its spot in the Euro 2024 final with a 2-1 victory over the Netherlands in Dortmund early Wednesday morning.
The Netherlands led with a stunning Xavi Simons strike in the seventh minute of the match. Harry Kane leveled the score from the spot in the 18th minute after England was awarded a controversial penalty. Ollie Watkins scored a stunner in the 90th minute to fire England into the final.
The Three Lions will now face Spain, who defeated France 2-1 in the first semifinal on Tuesday morning.
The Netherlands started the match brightly as Simons robbed Declan Rice, raced toward the England goal, and unleashed a powerful shot into the top corner from the edge of the box to give the Netherlands a 1-0 lead.
England was awarded a controversial penalty in the 18th minute as the referee, after being sent to watch the monitor, ruled that Harry Kane was caught by the studs of Denzel Dumfries. Kane equalized for England from the spot.
Foden thought he had given England a 2-1 lead when he dodged Dutch defenders and unleashed a low shot from close range, which was cleared off the line by Dumfries.
England seemed to have lost steam in the second half, but the Dutch failed to take any advantage of the England slackness. As the match was heading to extra time, Coach Gareth Southgate’s late double substitution worked wonders for England.
Cole Palmer threaded a beautiful pass to Watkins inside the box, who made a beautiful turn and scored in the far corner to send England to the final.
