KATHMANDU: The Embassy of Israel in Kathmandu marked the United Nations International Day for the Commemoration of the Victims of the Holocaust with a memorial event in Kathmandu on Tuesday.
Held under the global theme “Holocaust Remembrance for Dignity and Human Rights,” the event honored the memory of six million Jews killed during the Holocaust. “It also reflected on the enduring lessons of remembrance, dignity, and the responsibility to stand against hatred and antisemitism,” the embassy said in a statement.
The event was attended by senior government officials, diplomats, media representatives, and friends of Israel.
Speaking on the occasion, Israeli ambassador to Nepal, Shmulik Arie Bass, said racial discrimination and attempts to exterminate any people must never be repeated. “The Holocaust is a black mark on human history,” he added.
National Human Rights Commission Chairperson Top Bahadur Magar said the Holocaust had a lasting impact on international human rights law. “This resulted in the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, in which Nepal is a state party,” he added.
German ambassador to Nepal Udo Volz and Ambassador-designate of Australia Simon Ernst also spoke on the occasion.
