Embassy of India hands over school building

KATHMANDU: The Embassy of India in Kathmandu has handed over a newly built school building of Shree Mahendra Rastriya Secondary School, Baluwatar, Kathmandu.

The school building was built with the Government of India’s financial assistance of Rs 19.2 million under Nepal-India Development Cooperation, the embassy said issuing a statement on Thursday. Prasanna Shrivastava, Deputy Chief of Mission at the embassy,  handed over the school building to Santosh Budathoki, Chairman of the District Coordination Committee (DCC), Kathmandu. Officials of the Government of Nepal, representatives of different political parties, social workers, officials of the management committee, teachers, parents, and students were present on the occasion.

The Government of India grant was utilized for the construction of a three-storied school building and the provision of furniture for the school. The project was a part of the High Impact Community Development Project under an agreement between the governments of Nepal and India and was implemented by the DCC Kathmandu.

Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Chief of Mission Shrivastava said that the project was an important part of the robust development partnership between India and Nepal, which has made significant progress in recent years, spanning various priority sectors of the Government of Nepal and its people.

Mahendra Rastriya Secondary School was established in 1956 as a primary school. It was upgraded to a lower secondary level in 1995 and to a secondary level in 2000. It has over 600 students, about 50% of whom are girls.
