Election Commission proposes by-polls for April 13

KATHMANDU: The Election Commission has recommended to the government to hold by-elections on April 13.

A meeting of the Election Commission on Sunday proposed the dates for the by-polls.

The by-elections will be held in the Ilam-2 constituency of the House of Representatives and the Bajhang-1 seat of the Sudurpashchim Province Assembly.

The Ilam-2 seat became vacant with the passing of CPN-UML Vice President Subash Chandra Nembang. Nembang died due to cardiac arrest on September 12 last year. Likewise, the Bajhang-1 seat of the provincial assembly became vacant with the demise of Prithvi Bahadur Singh of Nepali Congress. Singh passed away in a road accident on June 20. He was serving as Minister for Home Affairs and Law of the provincial government.

“The Election Commission made the recommendation as per Section 68 of the House of Representatives Election Act, 2017, and Section 68 of the Provincial Assembly Election Act, 2017, and after consultation with the government,” the Election Commission said in a statement.

As per Article 84 (7) and 176 (8) of the Constitution of Nepal, 2015, in case the seat of any member of the House of Representatives or the provincial assembly falls vacant while its term remains for more than six months, the vacancy shall be fulfilled in the same electoral system as in which such seat was filled.
