KATHMANDU: Muslims across the country celebrated Eid-ul-Fitr marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
Eid marks the end of the 30 days of fasting. It also marks the beginning of the 10th month of the Islamic calendar – Shawwal.
Since the new moon was not visible on Wednesday, the Muslim community in the country decided to observe the festival on Thursday, according to Samim Miya Ansari, chairperson of the Muslim Commission.
Muslims attended prayers at their nearby mosques in the morning.
According to the Islamic faith, there are five pillars: ‘Roza’ (fasting), ‘Zakat’ (alms), ‘Hajj’ (pilgrimage to Mecca), ‘Namaz’ (prayer), and ‘Kalma’ (declaration of faith). The month of Ramadan is considered sacred. “Zakat (charity) is given during this month,” Ansari said.
According to the National Census 2078 (2021), Muslims make up 5.9% of Nepal’s total population.
