EC decides to hold presidential election on March 9

KATHMANDU: The Election Commission has finalized the dates of elections for the President and Vice President.

Organizing a press meet in Kathmandu, Chief Election Commissioner Dinesh Kumar Thapaliya said the presidential election will be held on March 9.

The term of President Bidhya Devi Bhandari is expiring on March 12.

Similarly, the Election Commission has decided to hold the election for Vice President on March 17.

The President and Vice President are elected by an electoral college consisting of federal and provincial assemblies. While members of the federal parliament have a vote weight of 79, the province assembly members have a vote weight of 48.

As per the constitution, the President and Vice President have to be from different gender or community.
