KATHMANDU: Former Prime Minister and Chairperson of the Nepal Samajbadi Party (NSP), Dr Baburam Bhattarai, has called for the immediate formation of the Budhi Gandaki Corridor Development Authority to oversee the development of areas affected by the Budhi Gandaki Reservoir Project (1,200 MW).
Dr. Bhattarai met with Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal on Friday and presented a three-point memorandum related to the Budhi Gandaki Corridor Multipurpose Project.
“The current weak structure of the project, which functions as a subsidiary under the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), should be abolished. A fully empowered Budhi Gandaki Corridor Development Authority with adequate rights and resources should be established immediately to implement the project,” Bhattarai said in the memorandum.
Similarly, Dr Bhattarai has requested the government to expedite the comprehensive development of the Budhi Gandaki Corridor through the newly proposed authority. Likewise, he has asked the government to immediately address the legitimate demands of the people affected by the project.
“We strongly urge the government to fulfill these demands by September 16. We will be compelled to launch a strong protest involving all stakeholders starting September 17 if the demands are not addressed,” said Dr Bhattarai.
