Dr Bhattarai bats for political system with directly elected executive head

KATHMANDU: Former Prime Minister and Chairperson of Nepal Samajbadi Party (Naya Shakti), Dr Baburam Bhattarai, has said that a directly elected executive president is essential to address the existing problems in the country and ensure democratic stability.

Addressing a demonstration organized by his party in Kathmandu on Wednesday, he urged one and all to adopt a directly elected executive system to ensure democratic stability. Recalling that there have been 11 government changes in the nine years since the constitution was promulgated, Dr. Bhattarai said that this has further intensified political instability. “A government should formulate and implement policies for at least 5–10 years. For this, a directly elected executive head is necessary,” he added.

He said the current political system has turned the top leaders of the three major parties into ‘petty kings’.

Dr Bhattarai said the unstable political situation, mistrust among political parties, lack of coordination within coalition governments and frequent changes in leadership in a short period have prevented prosperity and stability in the country.

He added that the idea of solving the country’s problems by restoring the monarchy is nothing but an illusion. “There is no need to give importance to the institution which the people have already abolished. The return of monarchy is impossible,” he claimed.
