KATHMANDU: Officials of the agitating Confederation of Nepalese Teachers (CNT) held a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs, Narayan Kaji Shrestha, in Kathmandu on Thursday.
In the meeting, CNT officials reiterated that they would not call off their protest until their demands were addressed. CNT President Kamala Tuladhar stated that they met with Shrestha to discuss security arrangements during the protest. “This meeting should not be interpreted as a negotiation,” she maintained.
CNT General Secretary Laxmi Kishor Subedi also said that the meeting focused on security arrangements for the teachers’ protest. “Thousands of teachers have come to Kathmandu to join the protest. Their management and security is a concerning issue,” he said, adding: “Although this was an informal discussion, we have clearly presented our demands to the Deputy Prime Minister.” he added.
Likewise, Somnath Giri, the central president of the Nepal Teachers Association, stated that they urged Shrestha to ensure the participation of whips from major political parties and the chairman of the Education Committee of the Education and Health Committee in formal negotiation between the government and the school teachers.
According to Deputy PM Shrestha’s Secretariat, Shrestha requested the delegation to seek a solution through dialogue and organize the protest in a dignified manner.
