DP Aryal set to be Speaker unopposed

KATHMANDU: Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Vice President Dol Prasad Aryal is certain to be elected as Speaker on Sunday, as no other candidate filed their nomination during the time specified by the Federal Parliament Secretariat on Friday.

Aryal filed his nomination on Friday morning.

Since RSP commands a strong majority in the House of Representatives and its candidate is certain to be elected, other parties did not file nominations for the position.

Ekram Giri, spokesperson for the Federal Parliament Secretariat, said that only Aryal’s nomination was registered within the specified period. “Although there is no other candidate, Aryal’s election will be formally announced during the meeting of the House of Representatives on Sunday,” Giri said.

As per the election program published by the Federal Parliament Secretariat, candidates could file their nominations between 11 am and 2 pm.

Aryal’s proposal was backed by RSP President Rabi Lamichhane and seconded by RSP Vice President Dr Swarnim Wagle, Minister for Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs Sobita Gautam, and Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport Sunil Lamsal.

RSP has 182 seats in the 275-member House of Representatives.
