KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court has ordered the government not to declare a public holiday on Falgun 1, as per the Nepali calendar, to commemorate the ‘people’s war’.

A division bench of Justices Ananda Mohan Bhattarai and Mahesh Sharma Poudel issued the order on Friday.

The apex court stated in its order that the decision to declare a public holiday without completing the remaining work of the peace process would traumatize the victims.

A cabinet meeting held on February 12 had decided to declare a public holiday on Falgun 1. The cabinet meeting was chaired by Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, who is also the chairman of CPN (Maoist Center).

The Maoists started a decade-long insurgency on Falgun 1, 2052 BS (February 13, 1996).
