Deputy PM Lamichhane questions relevance of provinces

KATHMANDU: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs, Rabi Lamichhane, has questioned the relevance of provinces.

Addressing the foundation day of the Nepal Samajbadi Party (NSP) in Kathmandu on Wednesday, Lamichhane said political parties were using provincial structures for the management of their third-tier leaders.

“Is this the provincial setup that the constitution had envisioned? Does it embody the spirit of federalism as envisioned by the constitution and the system, or has it defamed it?” he questioned. “We need to retrofit it.”

While NSP has been calling for alternative forces to move ahead by forming a front, Lamichhane said new parties should chart their political course on their own.
