Decision to release Lamichhane, others on bail challenged in Pokhara high court

POKHARA: A petition has been filed at the Pokhara High Court, challenging the Kaski District Court’s decision to release former Home Minister and Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) President Rabi Lamichhane and six other defendants in the Suryadarshan Cooperative fraud case on bail.

The Pokhara High Court Government Attorney’s Office filed the appeal on Monday, demanding that all seven defendants be held in custody during the trial.

The bench of District Judge Nitij Rai ordered the release of Lamichhane and other defendants, setting different bail amounts on January 9.

The Pokhara High Court Government Attorney’s Office has now challenged the decision.

Bishwanath Aryal, the deputy registrar and information officer of Pokhara High Court, said that the petition has been registered. “The petition will be presented before a single bench on Tuesday. The bench will decide how the case will proceed,” Aryal said.

A total of 63 individuals and institutions have been made defendants in the cooperative fraud, organized crime and money laundering cases. A total of Rs 1.51 billion has been sought in damages from the defendants.

Lamichhane and a few other defendants are also facing similar cooperative fraud cases in Kathmandu, Rupandehi, Chitwan, and Parsa districts.

Kathmandu District Court has released Lamichhane on bail of Rs 6.5 million.
