DCCs are of no use, let’s empower provinces: Thapa Gagan Kumar Thapa

LUMBINI: Nepali Congress (NC) General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa has stated that the structure of District Coordination Committees (DCCs) is not necessary.

Thapa added that the ruling coalition, which is discussing constitutional amendments, has reached a consensus that DCCs are not needed.

Addressing the first general convention of the Lumbini Province Committee of Nepal Muslim Association on Wednesday, Thapa clarified that republicanism, federalism, inclusivity, pluralism, and multi-ethnic and multi-religious principles in the constitution will remain unchanged. “Certain elements of the constitution will be revised,” he added.

Thapa also stressed the need to empower provinces and make them more efficient to strengthen the constitution.

“DCCs are not necessary at all; let’s empower and streamline provinces and make commissions more effective,” he stated.

Thapa also said that the electoral system needs to be reformed. “We will first prepare a list of necessary amendments and then bring other opposition parties on board for a broader consensus,” he added. “We will prepare a common agenda for constitutional amendments. As the largest party, NC will move forward by including all stakeholders.”

He also said that the NC-UML coalition government will remain in place until the 2027 election.
