KATHMANDU: This year’s Dashain festival remained relatively peaceful with only a few incidents reported in the Kathmandu Valley (Kathmandu, Lalitpur, and Bhaktapur districts), police say.
Although sporadic incidents were reported from the day of Fulpati, the seventh day of the Dashain on October 21, until October 27, there have been no major criminal activities or incidents of theft, robberies, and road accidents, said SSP Dinesh Raj Mainali, the spokesperson for the Kathmandu Valley Police Office.
The police had implemented a special security plan during the festival with police officers in plainclothes deployed in potential high-risk areas. Surveillance was conducted in all three districts using trained personnel and drones.
“No efforts were spared in the security arrangements. Police officers were mobilized in plainclothes, and even drones and dogs were used for surveillance. Dashain remained peaceful due to the deployment of additional resources for surveillance. We plan to continue surveillance until the Chhath festival,” said Mainali.
Despite the overall peaceful atmosphere, sporadic incidents did occur. A total of 103 incidents were reported between October 21 and 27, resulting in two fatalities and 118 injuries. Among the incidents, 51 were related to road accidents, causing one fatality and 73 injuries. Additionally, 13 incidents of fighting resulted in one fatality and 13 injuries. Ten theft incidents were reported, along with two incidents involving the use of sharp weapons that left three people injured. Three incidents related to gambling were recorded, leading to the arrest of 22 gamblers (seven from Kathmandu, 13 from Lalitpur, and two from Bhaktapur).
The police confiscated approximately Rs 500,000 from the gamblers.
