Damage assessment begins in Kavre nearly a year after deadly floods

KATHMANDU: Minister for Home Affairs, Ramesh Lekhak, has officially launched a detailed damage assessment of private homes affected by monsoon-induced disasters in Roshi Rural Municipality of Kavre.

The assessment, jointly organized by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority and Roshi Rural Municipality, began at Narayantar in Roshi-2 on Wednesday.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister Lekhak said that reconstruction efforts for damaged private homes have now begun. He added that fully destroyed homes would be rebuilt, while partially damaged ones would undergo repairs and reinforcement.

Kavrepalanchok, particularly Roshi Rural Municipality, was one of the worst-hit areas in last year’s late September floods.

Acknowledging delays in the damage assessment process, Lekhak said financial support for reconstruction will be provided in two phases. According to Lekhak, affected families will receive Rs 25,000 for temporary housing, while Rs 400,000 will be provided for reconstruction of fully damaged homes.

“The government has already released Rs 7.35 million to build temporary shelters in Kavre,” he added.

According to Roshi Rural Municipality, 563 private homes were damaged by the floods and landslides.
