KATHMANDU: The top leaders of three major political parties held separate meetings to discuss the transitional justice bill on Sunday.
Prime Minister and CPN (Maoist Center) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal held separate meetings with Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba and the leader of the main opposition CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma at his official residence on Sunday morning.
Sources close to Prime Minister Dahal claim Oli is positive about advancing the Bill to Amend the Enforced Disappearances Enquiry, Truth and Reconciliation Commission Act.
The terms of the transitional justice commissions expired on January 14. The government had extended the terms of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Commission of Investigation on Enforced Disappeared Persons by six months on July 14.
Although coalition partners Maoist Center and Nepali Congress are on the same page regarding the transitional justice law, the process of approving the crucial law is not moving ahead due to UML’s stance. Coalition leaders say UML has been insisting that the transitional justice law should be victim-friendly.
The three parties formed a sub-committee under the Law, Justice, and Human Rights Committee of the House of Representatives to iron out their differences on the provisions included in the Bill. However, even the sub-committee failed to give final shape to the TRC bill. The sub-committee subsequently passed the job to the senior leaders.
