KATHMANDU: The Flood Forecasting Division has warned that the risk of flooding is high today as cyclone “Montha” is expected to affect various parts of the country.

In its forecast, the division said that the water levels of most rivers in Koshi, Madhesh, and Bagmati provinces are likely to rise over the next three days.

It has urged the public to remain alert, stating that water flow in many rivers across these provinces will increase and that some rivers could experience sudden flooding.

According to the division, small rivers flowing through Taplejung, Sankhuwasabha, Solukhumbu, Tehrathum, Panchthar, Okhaldhunga, Khotang, Bhojpur, Dhankuta, Ilam, Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari, Udayapur, Parsa, Bara, Rautahat, Sarlahi, Dhanusha, Mahottari, Siraha, Saptari, Sindhuli, Ramechhap, Kavrepalanchok, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Makwanpur, Chitwan, Nawalparasi (East and West), Rupandehi, and Kapilvastu districts and their surrounding areas may see a significant rise in flow and possible flash floods.

The division has also advised people living near riverbanks to exercise special caution and make necessary preparations to stay safe from potential flooding.

Cyclone Montha made a landfall in Indian states of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday morning. The Indian met office has forecast moderate to heavy rains across India’s Bihar and North East as well as some parts of Nepal.
