KATHMANDU: Chairperson of the Agriculture, Cooperative, and Natural Resources Committee, Dr Arzu Rana Deuba, has proposed allowing the hunting of wild boars.
Deuba’s comments came after lawmakers raised the issue of crop destruction by monkeys in different villages across the country. She suggested castrating monkeys as a means of controlling their population. She also pointed out that since wild boars were also damaging crops, people should be permitted to hunt them.
“This is a very serious issue because it concerns the destruction of our food supply. The persistent problem of crop damage by monkeys has been ongoing. Wild boars are also becoming problematic to farmers,” she explained. “I am also a conservation activist, but there is no point in continuing conservation efforts when crops are being destroyed, and people have nothing to eat.”
Deuba also said the monkey population was controlled in Himachal, India, in just few years through castration. “We should request the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation to take appropriate measures. The situation has become problematic as people are facing food shortages,” she added.
