KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court has ordered the government to create an environment for school teachers to return to work within three days.

A single bench of Justice Nahakul Subedi issued the order on Thursday, hearing a writ petition filed by Advocate Shrawan Kumar Chaudhary.

In his petition, Chaudhary had sought the apex court’s appropriate order to create an environment for students to participate in a teaching and learning environment.

“Regarding the prompt need to address the legitimate and constitutionally valid demands of the protesting teachers, the defendants shall make appropriate and necessary decisions to ensure that an environment is created, within three days from the date of receiving this order, for the protesting teachers return to schools and resuming regular teaching,” the apex court order reads.

Chaudhary had made Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, Federal Parliament, Education Ministry, National Examination Board and Ministry of Law as defendants.

The Supreme Court has also directed authorities to make immediate and appropriate arrangements to ensure that the ongoing protest of teachers does not delay the publication of the Secondary Education Examination (SEE) results.

Likewise, the apex court has ordered that Class 12 examinations be conducted as scheduled.

The government, however, has already postponed the examination of Class 12.

The bench has also ordered the education ministry to submit a report within four days of the order to the court regarding the progress in implementing the order.

School teachers from across the country have been protesting in Kathmandu for the past three weeks, demanding immediate enactment of the School Education Bill.
