KATHMANDU: Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) President Rabi Lamichhane has claimed conspiracies are hatched to topple the government as soon as he initiates probes into corruption scandals.

Lamichhane made the comment when journalists asked him for his views on the formation of a new alliance between the Nepali Congress (NC) and CPN-UML.

Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Lamichhane also said that NC and UML joined forces to form a new government after realizing that leaders of their parties would be implicated if a corruption probe is initiated. “We don’t need to explain what is going on. Everything has become clear. You have all seen it,” Lamichhane told reporters. “You all asked me to launch an investigation into corruption cases. We launched the investigation accordingly, but they aren’t letting us stay even for a day.”

When asked if the government was being changed due to the arrest of Bechan Jha for an investigation into the Bhutanese refugee case, Lamichhane responded: “What else could this ‘restlessness’ mean? They became concerned about the constitution all of a sudden. We all know whether they are trying to protect this constitution or something else.”

Bechan Jha, who was absconding after police launched an investigation into the Bhutanese refugee case, was arrested last Friday. Coincidentally, talks between the NC and UML to topple the current government led by Maoist Center’s Pushpa Kamal Dahal began the same evening.

NC and UML reportedly reached an understanding to form a new government on Monday night. UML ministers in Dahal’s cabinet are preparing to tender their resignations later today.

RSP Chief Whip Santosh Pariyar has said that his party’s ministers would resign after the process to form a new government begins. “We won’t join the new government,” he added.
