KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Sushila Karki has stated that constitutional amendments do not fall within the mandate of her current government.
In her address to the nation on Thursday, Karki clarified that any changes to the constitution can only take place after the upcoming general election. “Issues raised by the Gen Z generation during the protests, such as amendments to Nepal’s constitution and governance system, are beyond the scope of the current interim government. I urge the youth and all Nepalis in favor of change to participate in the next election and pursue constitutional amendments through proper legal processes,” she said.
Prime Minister Karki also reaffirmed her government’s commitment to strict action against those responsible for the Gen Z protests. In her address, she noted that 74 people had died during the protests on September 8 and 9, of whom 59 have been officially recognized as martyrs by the government.
This was Prime Minister Karki’s first address to the nation since assuming office on September 12 after KP Sharma-led government was toppled by the Gen Z movement.
She added that it is the government’s duty to hold elections within six months, ensuring that the public’s desire for governance reform and good administration is fulfilled. Following the Gen Z protests on September 8 and 9, an interim government was formed under Karki’s leadership with the responsibility of conducting elections on September 12.
Karki stated that the government is committed to holding the House of Representatives election on the scheduled date of March 5 in a fair, independent and fear-free manner. She added that the government was exploring ways to provide voting rights for Nepalis living abroad.
“The government has already consulted the Election Commission on manpower, budget, and security arrangements to advance the electoral process,” she added.
