LUMBINI: CPN (Maoist Center) Chairperson Pushpa Kamal Dahal has said that an amendment to the constitution is necessary to ensure political stability.
Talking to reporters in Bhairahawa on Thursday, he said the Nepali Congress (NC) and CPN-UML, who raised the issue of constitutional amendments while making the government, are showing little interest now. “Constitutional amendment is essential for stability. The constitution should be reviewed and amended every ten years,” he said. “Amendments are not meant to curtail people’s rights but to expand them, and we are committed to this.”
Dahal clarified that his party has no interest in toppling the government and is instead focused on safeguarding people’s rights and understanding their struggles through its ongoing public awareness campaign.
The former Prime Minister also said that he and the party got opportunities to engage with people, and understand problems of the farmers, and families of martyrs and the disappeared people along the Hulaki Highway through the Tarai-Madhesh awareness campaign that it began in February.
He added that the campaign would strengthen national unity. Labeling royalist movements as gatherings of anarchists, Dahal stressed the need to reach people’s doorsteps to counter movements against the republic and its achievements.
