KATHMANDU: Nepal’s political deadlock has moved toward resolution with an agreement to dissolve the House of Representatives and appoint former Chief Justice Sushila Karki as Prime Minister of an interim government.

The decision was reached on Friday evening, following intense deliberations between President Ram Chandra Paudel and representatives of the Gen-Z youth movement.

The demonstrators had made dissolution of Parliament a precondition for any new government formation.

President Paudel had initially proposed appointing Karki as interim Prime Minister first, with the Cabinet subsequently dissolving the legislature. However, Gen-Z leaders rejected the proposal.

According to Kiran Pokharel, Press Adviser to the President, Karki will be sworn in at 9 pm tonight at the Office of the President.

Karki will be the first woman ever to become the head of the government.
