Consensus eludes ruling coalition on sharing of National Assembly seats

KATHMANDU: The meeting of the ruling coalition held to finalize the sharing of seats for the upcoming National Assembly election has ended inconclusively.

In the meeting held at the Official Residence of the Prime Minister on Thursday, the leaders discussed the sharing of seats but failed to reach a conclusion.

“The senior leaders have agreed to hold another meeting after conducting internal discussions within their respective parties,” Nepali Congress Chief Whip Ramesh Lekhak said. “While the meeting of the ruling coalition focused solely on the sharing of seats, NC is holding discussions with UML leaders on other relevant issues as well.”

The Election Commission is conducting the election to fill 19 seats in the National Assembly on January 25. Twenty seats in the upper house, including one to be appointed by the President on the recommendation of the Council of Ministers, are becoming vacant on March 4.

The ruling parties are discussing the sharing of seats after CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli requested the ruling coalition to avoid zero representation of the UML in the upper house.

Although the ruling coalition is positive about allocating some seats for the UML, they want the main opposition to support the government on the law related to transitional justice.
