KATHMANDU: A group of conflict victims organized a protest in Kathmandu on Tuesday, demanding a revision to the Bill that seeks to amend the Enforced Disappearances Enquiry, Truth and Reconciliation Commission Act. The Bill has been presented in the House of Representatives for consideration.
The conflict victims said the Conflict Victims Struggle Committee organized the protest program at New Baneswhar as their peaceful protests for 27 days failed to draw the attention of the government and political parties. The victims have claimed that the Bill grants immunity to perpetrators.
Shobha BC, a family member of a conflict victim, expressed her disappointment with the state’s response to their peaceful protests. “During our peaceful protest, eight of our friends, including Rita Karki, the coordinator of the struggle committee, were arrested,” she said. She said the state should tell her why her husband’s life was taken during the insurgency.
Stating that the Bill needs to be revised, BC urged the parliament to form a committee for discussions on the Bill before endorsing it in its current form. She warned of strong protests if the Bill is passed without revision.
