Commission formed to probe Balkumari incident submits report

KATHMANDU: A probe commission formed by the government to look into the deaths of two youths during a protest in Balkumari of Lalitpur has submitted its report.

Birendra Shah of Chaurpati in Achham and Sujan Rawat of Mahabu in Dailekh died when police opened fire at youths who took to the streets to protest the decision to exclude them from the Employment Permit System (EPS) Korea’s examination.

Former High Court Judge Shekhar Prasad Paudel, the commission’s chairman, submitted the report to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs Narayan Kaji Shrestha on Friday.

Former AIG of Nepal Police Arun Kumar GC and Home Ministry Joint Secretary Narayan Prasad Bhattarai were the other committee members.

According to a statement issued on Friday, the commission studied the incident thoroughly. It took statements from 16 people, including eyewitnesses, media persons, families of the victims, people injured in the incident, and doctors who attended to the victims. Likewise, it also took statements from officials of different security agencies, among other individuals.

Upon receiving the report, Deputy Prime Minister Shrestha stated that the government would implement the recommendations made in the report.
