KATHMANDU: Nepal Police has summoned DSP Bed Joshi, the commander of the police force mobilized to restore order at Manipal Hospital in Pokhara on Monday, the headquarters.
Relatives of a 57-year-old woman, who passed away while undergoing treatment at the hospital, attacked the attending doctors on Monday afternoon, accusing them of negligence in her treatment. The Gandaki Provincial Police Office had mobilized police personnel at the hospital under DSP Joshi’s command.
In response to the attack on health professionals, doctors at Manipal Hospital have suspended all services except emergency care. Doctors in Kathmandu also expressed their solidarity by taking out a protest rally in Kathmandu on Tuesday.
The situation at the hospital still remains tense.
According to the provincial police office, Police Inspector Madan Shrestha, who allegedly told the agitated relatives of the deceased woman that he had beaten up the doctor, has been suspended pending an investigation.
Police have arrested Binaya Gurung for attacking the doctors. The deceased woman’s relatives are staging a demonstration at the hospital, demanding action against the doctors who treated the woman and the release of Gurung.
