CoAS Sharma urges vigilance against propaganda

KATHMANDU: Chief of Army Staff Prabhu Ram Sharma has expressed concerns over unfounded reports related to transfers and promotions of senior officers in the army.

Addressing the Commanding Officers Orientation Program at the Nepal Army Headquarters on Tuesday, Sharma urged the army personnel to stay vigilant against activities detrimental to the organization’s interests, motivated by personal agendas. Directing the army personnel to be cautious of unrestrained propaganda regarding the Nepal Army’s activities and regular operation processes through the misuse of various media, Sharma said his sole interest lies in institutional well-being. “I want to assure you all that I would not engage in any dealings contrary to the law, procedures, and protocols. The Nepal Army, built on the foundation of the blood and sweat of countless soldiers, will not be weakened by the efforts of those seeking to undermine it for personal gain,” he added.

“There were rumors that I was promoting an individual, who does not meet the prescribed qualifications, to prepare him for the position of CoAS, to favor a specific political party and secure an ambassadorial post post-retirement. These are mere attempts to tarnish the institutional image of the army.”

He said that the army headquarters diligently examines candidates’ educational qualifications, citizenship, and related documents before recommending them for promotion. Sharma also cited instances of the army headquarters initiating investigations against officers with suspicious documents.

“While healthy competition is appropriate and natural for professional development, I request army personnel not to harbor hopes that one can move forward through unhealthy blame games,” Sharma said. “There are units to address grievances related to transfers, promotions, and other activities related to professional development. Therefore, I urge you not to engage in unwarranted activities outside the organization.”
