KATHMANDU: Suspended Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana Sunday said the ruling coalition offered to withdraw the impeachment motion against him if he was willing to step down.
Giving his statement at the Impeachment Recommendation Committee of the parliament, Rana said Nepali Congress leader Dina Upadhaya had met him with the offer at his quarter.
“A political leader told me ‘we will facilitate and withdraw (the motion) if you are ready to resign’. ‘Work for one or one and half months and resign to pave the way for Deepak (acting Chief Justice Deepak Raj Joshee)’,” he said. “I can reveal the name if you want.”
When a member of the committee said: “Who? You will have to reveal the name,” Rana said: “You can ask Deena of Nepali Congress. She came to meet me. She told me she came after consulting with Prachanda and Sher Bahadur Deuba.”
When the committee member questioned whether the leader concerned was Deena Upadhyaya, Rana replied affirmatively. “She came to my quarter to meet me. You can ask her,” he added.
The committee had prepared 43 questions to interrogate Rana.
Rana was automatically suspended after lawmakers of the ruling coalition registered an impeachment motion against him in the House of Representatives on February 13.
