CNT decides to launch protest from third week of August

KATHMANDU: The Confederation of Nepalese Teachers (CNT) has decided to launch protests from the third week of August, expressing serious dissatisfaction over the government’s delay in issuing the School Education Act in line with the previous agreement reached with it.

The CNT had given the government until August 6 to finalize the School Education Bill and table it in the House of Representatives. With the deadline now passed, the CNT held a meeting in Kathmandu on Thursday and decided to move forward with protest programs.

Teacher leaders participating in the meeting said that they have now arrived at a conclusion that protests are unavoidable. Bhupal Upreti, general secretary of the Institutional School Teachers’ Union (ISTU), said that a full meeting of the CNT will be held in the first third week of August to finalize the protest programs and dates.

“The meeting will decide the modality of the protest. In the meantime, we will continue our efforts for dialogue with political leaders and lawmakers to build consensus,” Upreti said. “But the protest is inevitable now.”

The CNT had drawn the government’s attention multiple times, demanding that the School Education Bill include provisions related to the professional security of teachers.
